A Word from Our Author
Hello, my name is Michael Nixon, and I am the author of the A Cavern Between Worlds series. I have several interests and hobbies, but some of my favorites are taking walks in the woods, playing Minecraft, spending time with family, and traveling. I enjoy visiting caverns, mountains, beaches, and hiking through forests, and I use some of the details from these experiences in my writing.
Knowing I Wanted to Be a Writer
I knew I wanted to be a writer by the time I reached high school, though my interest in books began at a young age. Throughout my childhood, my parents read to my sister and me. My favorite childhood stories were the ones that rhymed. As we grew a little older, my dad continued to read to us, eventually moving on to reading entire series of novels, with fantasy stories becoming a particular favorite.
My formal years of education were a combination of homeschool and public school. I started writing simple stories in my elementary years. I liked being able to use my imagination to make stories that I found humorous. Then, in my middle school and high school years, my dad took a job in Miami, so SE Florida became our new home.
Moving to Florida
Suburban life in Florida was very different from rural life in Michigan, but our new neighbors were friendly and made us feel welcome. The subtropical climate was a vast change from the temperate climate of MI, and so were the reptiles, birds, and fish. I enjoyed seeing and learning about the new kinds of animals and plants. My schooling choices allowed me to learn about all types of subjects that interested me, but most importantly, I had time to create and write. My sister and I were also able to attend dance classes and perform in the South Miami area.
Returning to Michigan
Eventually, we moved back to Michigan to be closer to my grandparents, and I soon started taking classes, including writing and journalism classes, at Monroe County Community College. I had articles published in the college newspaper and in my local newspaper. I went on to graduate with a degree in marketing from Eastern Michigan University. I chose this area of study because I wanted to learn how marketing skills could help me in my career as an author.
Continuing Writing My Series
After I completed my bachelor’s degree, I continued writing my series: A Cavern Between Worlds, which I had started during my teen years. The planet, Desmos, introduced in The Adventure Begins, is only one of a number of alien planets that play a part in the series, and there are many different alien life forms as well. I hope readers will enjoy these unusual characters and alien planets as they travel the cosmos with Frederick and Jonathan. Happy reading!
